With the wide array of boat building plans out there, ranging from wooden boat construction layouts to products that offer fiber glass boat construction, what should you choose?

Firstly, it’s worth mentioning that there are both free and paid boat building plans available on the internet. Naturally, you might want to save costs when you’re researching exactly how you’re going to be building the boat of your dreams, but in my experience it’s worth ‘splashing’ out a little here (mind the terrible pun!) before you get started.

Why exactly?

Well, for a start, they are tried and tested. They have been used by hundreds, if not thousands, of people before and they have been written by skilled experts with experience in their field. They offer support, detailed insights into the methods you will need to use (for example, stich-and-glue construction techniques), and ultimately give you the tips and hints you’ll be hard pressed to find elsewhere on the internet.

So, the reason why wooden boat construction plans are better than other building layouts:

Feasibility

Until I got started building my boat, I’d always toyed with the idea of building one in my spare time. Like all dreams, they can often be exaggerated and not too accurate – often failing to take into account all the practicalities of the project I was about to undertake.

I soon realised after researching that carbon fiber and other materials weren’t an option: either they were too expensive to use, required too costly tools or I simply didn’t have the technical know-how for the complexity of the processes and methods they require.

Wooden boat building plans offer the perfect mix of being both feasible in their costs and the skill requirements they demand, the challenge and enjoyment you get out of it, and the quality of the end boat.

o Costs – using Plywood or other malleable woods as a construction material for your boat is cheaper than expensive substitutes like carbon fiber
o Skills – the techniques demanded are demanding at first to perfect, but are very learnable.
o Mastering and perfecting skills also leads to the enjoyment you’ll receive from undertaking the project.

All of these reasons underpin the popularity of wooden boat building plans compared to their counterparts.
