Now that I am older I think that building your own boat can be fun, and educational. Boat plans are easy to obtain if you do not have the time or knowledge to draft your own. First, you must decide on what type of boat you want to build.

Boat plans can be obtained for wooden, steel, fiberglass and aluminum boats and for many activities such as duck hunting, fishing, sailing or leisure craft. Because of the rapid growing rate of technology it is even possible to simply do an internet search for your type of boat plans, and you can print them right off the computer!

Companies like Plans4Boats have been providing online, reliable boat plans in DVD format and consumers seem to really enjoy the readiness of these services. Most of these online resources will even instruct you on what tools you will need, how to use them, and step by step directions on how to actually build your boat. However, boat plans need to be very specific for your type of build to ensure the safety of the craft. If you are off even the slightest, your boat may sink or take on water very quickly.

Do your research well and you will find that building your own boat from boat plans can be fun and provide years of entertainment.

To build a small wooden boat would require planning and some woodworking skills and tools to get the project started. However, to get everything done right, you have to keep in mind some of the things to consider in building a small wooden boat.

A good building plan should take you through the whole process of it step-by-step. It should have a complete list of materials needed so you can have it prepared beforehand and see if it fits with your budget.

Naturally, you might want to save costs when you’re researching exactly how you’re going to be building the boat of your dreams, but in my experience it’s worth ‘splashing’ out a little here (mind the terrible pun!) before you get started.

Here are some of the tools you will require when building a boat. Remember if you spend the money on good quality tools they will last you a lifetime.

Each of these options has certain advantages and disadvantages for the novice builder. Kits are probably the easiest method by which to build a boat by yourself. Most kits are based on plywood building methods, and with all the materials needed to build the boat and with some kits the plywood will already be cut, measured and ready to assemble. If you are looking to build a boat quickly, with little effort, than a boat kit may be the best option for you. The downside? They can be remarkably expensive. For example, a simple eleven foot plywood kayak by one of the largest kit retailers will cost you well over $700, and that does not even include the shipping costs (which are considerable, considering many kits can weight upwards of a hundred pounds).

You can save several hundred of dollars by choosing to build a boat yourself instead using a kit. However, much of these savings will depend on your being able to find reliable, easy to follow plans that are suitable for a beginner. Good plans should have step by step instructions, illustrations, comprehensive material lists, blueprints, and contact information in case you have any questions. You should probably stick to plywood plans if you are a beginner, and the stitch-and-glue plywood method is probably easiest for your first boat building experience.

Building a boat by hand can take a bit longer than if you are using a kit, and you are more likely to encounter challenges during the building process – although good boat plans should help you overcome these challenges on your own as well. Some additional advantages of building your boat from scratch using boat plans include the knowledge you will gain of boat building methods, and the pride you will have in knowing that you built your boat completely by yourself from start to finish.

If you are looking into the prospect of using these portable solar panels for heating, they may not be sufficient enough to do that unless you have a lot of them. And by doing so, they might come out a little more expensive to build. All these things, combined with a well insulated house and high efficiency appliances, can make for not only greatly reduced power and/or heating bills, but a feeling of independence. Start a garden in your back yard and you are good to go. When renovating my current house I am going to consider all of my options. I have already insulated and am now looking to the next step.

Solar power is the least obtrusive method for generating power. There are no towers or moving parts and it’s easy to set up. The biggest problem is the cost. It’s not hard to spend thirty thousand dollars to fully power a house. One option is to install a smaller system or far fewer storage cells. This will supplement your current power and save money on your monthly bill. On a sunny day while everyone is at work you may end up selling power back to the power company. Another option is to build the entire system yourself. There are several guides available online, usually for around fifty dollars. They will show you everything from building the panels to installation and storage.

Wind energy is another option often considered further north where solar cells are less efficient. It should go without saying, but any area with considerable wind is a great candidate for a wind turbine. While they should never be used as a sole source of power, a wind turbine can put out a lot of power when the wind is up. Another consideration, of course, is your neighbors. Larger units can be quite tall and, well, to say the least, noticeable. Be sure to check your local building codes, neighborhood covenants, and neighbors’ opinions. Commercially available units are usually priced from around five thousand on up. Many of the solar how-to guides. I mentioned above include material on constructing your own windmill at a very low cost. Some are small enough to mount on your roof and would not require the same large tower that many commercial units have. While you may need several of these, as apposed to one large commercial unit, the cost difference may be well worth it.

One other option that I will mention only briefly is hydroelectric power. Very few people, relatively speaking, have access to moving water and even less have a water source that is manageable enough to dam and convert to power. Installing a dam of any sort is very hard to accomplish with today’s regulations. Check with your local agencies and the local EPA to make sure you have all your ducks in a row or you will face a stiff fine at the very least. Drop-in impellers are available; they look similar to a boat motor and have a propeller that is turned like a windmill. While not as efficient, these units do not require excavation permits and are a great alternative for anyone who has access to flowing water.

When renovating a house all of these options are great to look at. Always weigh the pros and cons, especially if the house is to be resold. Never invest more than you expect to get out. Keep in mind that there are great tax incentives offered for efficiency and all things “green”. When you are working on your own house just consider how long you plan on staying and if the initial investment will be repaid within that time period. Don’t forget to factor in maintenance while keeping in mind the “feel good” value that only you can quantify. If you are “handy” consider the do-it-yourself approach. Whatever you decide, the project will be a great learning experience.
