for the Captain’s info it is not a stern wheeler. it was a steam powered ship with propellers.

as to your question, yes you can still build a ship out of wood, but it won’t be cheep. there are still boat builders with the skill to get it constructed. if your are building a large ship for hire then you will be subject to certification by the USCG.

suggest that you begin by finding a boat designer to create the design for your ship. the designer will be well versed in the rules and construction law that apply.
