Setting up Forms
Author: admin
Setting up forms for a strip-built kayak. The forms are 1/2″ MDF, strung on a 2″ x 4″ aluminum extrusion strongback. Pre-cut spacers assure quick, and accurate alignment. More info at: www.guillemot-kayaks.com I really like this method of setting up the forms. As long as you have a straight strongback, are accurate cutting your forms and take a little care in cutting the spacer, it is really hard to go wrong with the alignment of all the forms. The strongback assures they are straight, the spacers lock the forms at right-angles to the strongback and locks in the spacing. The center spacer uses a couple of wedges to tighten up all the spacers and this is all that is needed to loosen up the forms. When doing staple-free boat construction using the hot-melt glue method, this provides a quick way to free up the forms. A full description of this method is available in my book: building-strip-planked-boats.com
