Carl Eichenlaub – Snipe Builder
Author: admin07 30th, 2010
Carl Eichenlaub started building Snipes before he started sailing them. Back when wooden boats where the only boats, Carl made Snipes in San Diego starting with an order of 5 boats from the Mission Bay Yacht Club. He started sailing them when one of his woodworkers wanted a Snipe but needed someone to drive it till he got the hang of racing it. Carl earned his reputation as a master boatwright the hard way. He was always available when someone needed help with their boat. In fact at the Peoria National in 1965 he took his wood plane to a boat that was an 1/8″ too big at every station – the boat measured in and went on to take 3rd in the Nationals that year.
