With a lifelong love of water and traditional wooden boats, enterprising Bangladeshi woman Runa Khan Marre is determined to save the unique cultural heritage of Bangladeshi boat-building. “Boatbuilding is the one of the oldest crafts of this country. Its authenticity makes it a masterpiece of art and technology, part of the memory of humankind. She is establishing a living museum 20 kilometres from the capital, Dhaka, which will open in April 2007. The public will be able to watch as 40 traditional types of boat are restored or built by boat carpenters and craftsmen with traditional skills.
